Web Assignment:
Exploring Astronomy Online

Introduction

There are thousands of interesting and useful web sites about astronomy and space exploration. For this assignment you will visit a few of them to see what they have to offer. In the process you will create some notes for yourself about things to observe in the sky and places to find interesting information.

For ten of the following web sites record the following information:

  1. Describe the site in your own words in a few sentences. Include information abuot the site’s purpose and main content.
  2. List the types of content the site offers. Types of content include: photos, observation guides to current sky events, simulators, calculators, news, basic background information, etc.
  3. If appropriate, use the site to plan one sky observation that you could actually do in the next 30 days. If you do this for more than one site choose a different event or object from each site. Include information about what you will observe, where in the sky it will be found, and the time and date.
  4. Use the sites you explore to learn about three of the following topics. Write a brief description of what you learn in 3 or 4 sentences for each of the three topics your choose.
    • the life-cycle of stars
    • solar astronomy
    • constellations
    • the moon
    • the planets
    • human space flight
    • robotic space exploration
    • star clusters/nebulas/galaxies/cosmology
    • one recent item of space-related news
