Rules for multiplication and division involving significant figures:


  1. The least number of significant figures in any number in your calculation determines the number of significant figures in the answer.
  2. Pure numbers (such as exact conversion factors and defined quantities) do not affect the number of significant figures.
Remember: the result of a calculation cannot be more precise than the measurements used to make the calculation.
