Overview

Chemistry is the study of substances and their transformations. This assignment is intended to make students more familiar with the practice of thinking about molecules when they think about substances. Each week a new molecule will be assigned. Using a Google Doc as a template, students will be expected to research the molecule, answer some questions about it, and provide some drawings of it at the molecular level. Links to useful web sites will be provided. You will submit your responses by using the link from the Google Classroom page for your class. Be sure to click on the correct week. When you click on it a document will open in which you will enter your responses.

• Encyclopedia Britannica Online This link will work at school but if you need to access it at home then you will need to create a login at http://libraries.maine.edu/mainedatabases/marvelauth/users/register.asp.
• LearnChemistry from the Royal Society of Chemistry Substances information page
• Chemistry in Its Element Podcast (Periodic Table) If the molecule of the week is an element then go to this page and listen to the short podcast about the element by finding it on the periodic table.
• iTunes page for the Chemistry in its Element Podcast On this page there are 100 podcasts about various compouds. Perhaps one of them is the molecule of the week.
• The Molecule of the Month Do a search to see whether our Molecule of the Week was once a Molecule of the Month
• From the Chemical Education Digital Library: Models 360 Go to the site and look up the molecule of the week to see a 3-D rendering of the molecular structure. Click on the various buttons to see what they do and what you can learn about the molecule. Also, try right-clicking on the interactive graphic for more options. Finally, don't forget to click on the tab marked ‘Solids’ that you will find in the upper-right hand corner of the page.

• American Chemical Society Reactions YouTube Channel This channel has a wide variety of videos about chemistry and may have one or more that is relevant to this week’s molecule.
